Finding solutions to the changing business landscape can be difficult for small business. There are plenty of transport based companies that are fabulous at moving goods. But for the best small business solutions look for independent logistic operators that are warehouse based, that can use any transport provider if requested.

Why is this important, freight in Australia is generally the largest component of your distribution costs, locking into a single freight provider means you will have little leverage to lower this cost. The population of Australia is spread out over a vast area as detailed by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in their 2009-10 year book.

From my experience the breakdown of costs  for distribution as a general guide is 20% Handling, 30% Storage and 50% Freight. Handling and storage can be directly managed by negotiating unit rates for each of the service components and then limiting the amount of storage or processing you use. The freight on the other hand will vary greatly depending on the size and weight of your products and where the customers are.

Having the ability to swap freight providers as your products or customer base changes, can have a dramatic effect on your profitability.

So how can you tell, well firstly, a warehousing based logistics provider will be able to offer you a selection of freight providers or if you have a preferred freight provider they will be comfortable to use it. Secondly they will have extensive pick & pack capability, not just pallets or cartons, but be able to manage single inner sales units and have extensive inventory systems to manage the processes.
Freight based companies will have good vehicles and tracking systems, and may charge lower rates for storage and handling, but may more than make this up with higher costs on freight which you are locked into.

Selecting a logistics provider, ask for references from current and past customers of a similar size and nature to your business. Being able to build trust with your logistics company will allow you relax and enjoy your core business knowing that everything else is taken care of.

With the RBA announcing another interest rates cut [1], we are reminded of the impact business has on the economy. Steadfast Australia is committed to making a positive difference through calculated growth, capital investment and staff training. In an increasingly competitive market, we are proud of the milestones we have achieved.

It is our belief that ‘market sentiment’ is what we choose it to be. Yes, times have been tougher these past five years compared to the previous, but we have always been (and continue to remain) positive about the future. We cannot achieve great things if we lose sight of our ambitions and our pursuit for a vibrant and prosperous economy.

We invite all our readers to join us in this mindset to change the market sentiment from an indexation level of 3 up to above 10! (Our record highest being 21.1 in 2002) [2]

We wish you only the best for 2015!

Our emergency services employees and volunteers put themselves in harm’s way everyday to help us stay safe or help us when we are in trouble.

With this in mind, please remember that Emergency Zones are now 25km/h areas – previously 40km/h. Unfortunately, an article in the Advertiser (click HERE for article – new window) has revealed that over the past 7 months, 270 drivers have been caught travelling over the 25km/h limit in the emergency zones; 215 of them were travelling faster than 35km/h, and unbelievably, 33 of them were travelling faster than 55km/h – well above the safe limit.

As a warehousing and distribution company, with our own trucks on the road (as well as the many third parties we use) we have a great appreciation of our emergency services and we feel we have a high level of responsibility for their’s (and everyone’s) safety on the road. We would like to remind all who read our news feed that we owe it to our emergency services employees and volunteers to slow down to 25km/h in emergency zones and ask you to remember that in most cases they also have family waiting for them to come home the same as us.

“Safe driving” – from the Steadfast family.

Having a long partnership with various different subsidiaries of Toll, Steadfast Australia is very conscious of the take over bid offered by Japan Post.

You may have seen this popping up in your news feeds. Toll, being an Australian Company, looking to be bought by an overseas investor (Japan Post), draws many parallels with the unsuccessful 2005 take over bid by Lion Nathan for the Coopers Brewery (incidentally Lion is owned by Japanese drinks giant Kirin).  The difference in this case is that the board of directors are recommending shareholders accept the offer.

This being the case, a valid question does appear; is the sale of another Australian company to a foreign investor truly worth any logistical advantage Toll is set to gain from such a deal? Or is this purely a means through which another foreign investor can increase their footprint in Australasia, with little benefit for Australia and the Australian company that was purchased?

Whatever the outcome, Steadfast Australia remains committed to its clients and we will continue to strive for a better tomorrow through best business practices for all our clients. We hope this takeover of Toll by (state owned) Japan Post will represent a win for Australian consumers, and we look forward to a continued and strong partnership with Toll & Japan Post.

It has been a tragic and inexcusable series of events plaguing the Princess Highway recently.

Though some of blame can be laid on decreasing profit margins and the financial strain on the current market, we cannot forget that no job is worth the health of any person and in the end the responsibility falls on us – the operators.

It is with sincere concern that we remind our fellow industry partners, and our own fleet managers, to ensure all vehicles a well maintained and promote the use of the arrester beds amongst drivers if any difficulty braking is experienced.

As an industry leader, Steadfast Australia remains committed to ensuring the safety of our employees, our community, and our families – all of whom share the roads.

For more information regarding the arrester beds and other FAQ’s, please click  on the link below to view more information (new window/tab will open) on the SA Government Infrastructure website.

Using our services will allow you to simplify your export strategy, reduce stress and free up your time so you can focus more on your overall business.

If you are not yet one of our valuable clients, feel free to ask for a quote and one of our friendly staff will be in contact with you shortly with some more information, or a no obligation chat about how best we might be able to serve you. It is our firm belief that our high level of customer service, warehousing/storage options, and diversity of our distribution network (now also including exports!) will leave you wishing you had started using our service yesteryear!

From all the team at Steadfast – we wish you a warm winter!!
